High school learning will always need strong fundamentals—desks, chairs, and hardworking classrooms that support focus and instruction. But the spaces between classes matter, too: the corners where students catch their breath, meet up with friends, or find a quiet spot to reset.
Purchased in summer 2025 in preparation for the 2025–2026 school year, High Tech High School in Chula Vista, CA created a new student lounge designed to feel warm, welcoming, and truly student-centered—anchored by durable soft seating and an indigo rug that ties the whole space together.
High Tech High Chula Vista first opened its doors in fall 2007 with approximately 150 ninth-grade students in San Diego County’s South Bay. Set against the scenic canyons of the Otay Valley, the campus draws daily inspiration from the natural beauty around it—encouraging students and teachers to create projects that connect learning to the environment, the community, and the world beyond the classroom walls.
And that same intention—designing with students in mind—carried into this new lounge space.
“When we got the first shipment we were so giddy with excitement. We plan on doing a grand opening of the new student lounge with our students and staff. I'll send pictures!”
— Yoli Soler-González, Instructional Coach and Family & Community Engagement Coordinator, High Tech High
The Goal: Create a Student Lounge That Feels Like a Destination
There’s something powerful about giving students a space that says, You belong here. A well-designed lounge can become a calming touchpoint in a busy day—supporting everything from quick peer collaboration to a quiet moment to regroup.
High Tech High’s vision for the lounge focused on:
- Comfort without sacrificing durability
- Flexible seating for groups, pairs, and solo time
- A cohesive look that feels modern, upbeat, and student-centered
With support from our trusted, seasoned sales rep Sharon, the team chose pieces that would hold up to everyday high school life—while still feeling inviting and “home base” comfortable for students.
The Design That Made It Work: Soft Seating + a Rug Anchor
To make the lounge feel intentional (not temporary), the design paired two key elements: a modular soft seating package and a bold, modern rug.
AKT 7-Piece Lounge Soft Seating Package by MooreCo
This lounge set by MooreCo creates a comfortable gathering zone that supports conversation, collaboration, and relaxed study time. It’s easy to picture students sliding in with a laptop, leaning in for a group project, or simply taking a breather between classes.
Color Rings Carpet (Indigo) by Flagship Carpets
The carpet by Flagship Carpets adds energy, color, and an instant sense of place. The circular pattern brings movement and personality while still feeling polished—exactly the kind of visual warmth that helps a student lounge feel less like “extra seating” and more like a destination.
Design detail that brought it all together:
High Tech High centered the AKT lounge seating over the Indigo rug to anchor the area and clearly define the lounge zone. It’s a simple move that instantly makes the space feel finished, cohesive, and ready to be used.
Why This Student Lounge Layout Works So Well
A thoughtfully designed lounge supports more than aesthetics—it supports students.
This lounge setup helps:
- Create a clear zone for students to gather, study, or reset
- Encourage positive social connection with group-friendly seating
- Support quiet breaks with comfortable spots for solo downtime
- Add warmth and color that feels inviting—not institutional
- Balance style + durability for everyday high school use
Quick Tips for Designing a High School Soft Seating Area
If you’re planning a student lounge, counseling waiting area, media space, or flex common area, these simple guidelines help the space land well with students:
- Start with the rug to define the footprint and set the tone.
- Choose seating that supports multiple uses (conversation, study, downtime).
- Keep pathways open so the space feels easy to enter and move through.
- Use color strategically—a statement rug can tie everything together fast.
- Plan for durability with commercial-grade materials made for high traffic.
Ready to Create a Lounge Students Actually Want to Use?
Student lounges don’t replace classrooms—they support them. When students have a comfortable space to reset, connect, or focus for a few minutes, they return to learning feeling more grounded and ready for what’s next.
If you’re planning a new student lounge (or refreshing a common area), we’d love to help you create a space that’s as durable as it is welcoming—with soft seating and rugs that work beautifully together.
