If you have not visited an American classroom in the last few decades, then you could be in for a surprise. For the most part, the days of neat rows of carefully-arranged desks are gone. Instead, teachers favor more collaborative arrangements such as desk clumps, communal U shapes, or stadium seating.
Regardless of what patterns teachers favor, they will all agree that student desks must be sturdy. Here are three reasons why.
Desks Suffer Standard Wear and Tear
Most obviously, school desks suffer daily wear and tear. In classrooms with older students, class groups change rooms multiple times per day; and young people are not given to being the most careful stewards of what's entrusted to them. Desks are bumped, jostled, and shuffled as the students come and go.
Desks Are Sometimes Re-purposed
In addition, not all desks are used exclusively as they've been designed to function. Chi
ldren (and teachers!) will often use them as step ladders, tabletops for experiments, and so forth. The stress put on the desks when they're used outside the scope of their design can be enormous.
Desk Arrangements Are Often Fluid
As we mentioned at the outset of this post, modern teachers favor a diversity of desk arrangements in their classrooms. For many of them, desk arrangements are even fluid, changing between each class session according to the day's lesson plans.
Why This Matters
Considering how much strain student desks can suffer due to daily wear and tear, misappropriated uses, and the constant shuffling of arrangements, it's vital that when you invest in new desks, you carefully consider the desks' overall durability.
