5 Factors to Consider When Purchasing School Chairs
It is time to purchase new school chairs for your classroom, but the amount of choices available can be overwhelming. To help you decide which will work best for your particular needs, we have provided five essential criteria for you to consider. Chair Height and Age of Students Will these chairs be used primarily for Kindergarten classrooms or might they also be used for older children? It is important to consider this question when choosing a chair so that you purchase chairs that the students fit in properly and avoid returns. Chairs are available in several seat heights to accommodate all student ages. A common stack chair may range in sizes of 10"H, 12"H, 14"H, 16"H and 18"H. These heights are measured from the floor to the seat surface. You can follow this rule to measure your existing chairs and order more of the same size, or use the guide below if ordering for the first time. If the chairs are to be used by various age groups, either purchase different sizes to accommodate each age or purchase the chair height made to accommodate the oldest in the group, as it is better for chairs to be too big than too small.  Storage  If additional storage is needed for student backpacks and books, consider a chair with a book basket. Chairs with book baskets are convenient and provide easy access for students to reach the supplies they might need per lesson throughout the day, without causing a traffic jam in the classroom. This might also eliminate the need to purchase additional school furniture, such as cubby units. If cubbies are available for the children's backpacks and belongings, then you have a little more flexibility on the style of the chair.  Mobility Consider how the chairs will be used. Will the chairs be moved around the classroom throughout the day for collaborative work? Will they be moved from room to room on a regular basis or used in a space that serves a dual function? If this is the case, consider a mobile chair with casters that is easy to stack. Incorporating flexible furniture that is easy to move around the room and store will save you time and money.  Color The color of seats that you choose is both a matter of tone and of practicality. From a pragmatic standpoint, if you foresee your students coloring on the chairs or performing other forms of mild vandalism, black or navy would serve as a good choice. If you are seeking a specific tone for your classroom, the color blue has been proven to calm nerves, while green energizes the senses and purple tends to stimulate the creative part of the brain.   Movement Recess and physical movement throughout the school day have been decreasing over the years, and many teachers find that it is difficult for their students to sit still for long periods of time. One solution to this issue is to have classroom chairs that are able to rock a bit, also known as active seating. Active seating engages you as you sit, allowing you to bounce or rock slightly and keeps your body active, taking the edge off of nervous or excess energy. This movement makes it easier to focus while also strengthening core muscles and burning calories. Active seating is a great solutions for kids with learning disabilities who find sitting still extremely difficult.  https://youtu.be/cpDQNh4LZ9I   For more information and advice about choosing chairs for your classroom, please contact us.
