Celebrate Pi Day with Math, Fun, and a Slice of Pie!

A Quick History of Pi Day

Pi Day is coming up—how are you going to celebrate? Whether it's with a pie-eating contest or diving into the wonders of geometry, Pi Day has become a fun and engaging way to celebrate mathematics in classrooms around the world.

The holiday was first recognized in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw, a longtime employee of the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Shaw, known as the "Prince of Pi," wanted to create a fun and engaging way to celebrate mathematics, so he and his colleagues marked the occasion by marching in a parade and, of course, enjoying some delicious pie.

Since then, Pi Day has grown into an internationally recognized event, with schools, museums, and math enthusiasts celebrating through fun activities like memorizing digits of pi, hosting pie-eating contests, and exploring the wonders of circles and geometry.

In 2009, Pi Day was even officially recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives as a national celebration of mathematics and its impact on the world!
